Our Story

On-Water Training has instructed thousands of boaters since 1988, when founder Bob Meng originated the first hands-on, on your boat type education. On-Water-Training has since provided training to thousands of people on board nearly every style vessel built.

Bob Meng, who as an airline pilot and experienced yacht captain found a lack in professional marine training. Understanding how the airlines develop highly proficient and safe pilots, he took to the drawing board to create the first ever professional hands-on instruction for boaters.

On-Water Training brings a wealth of knowledge to the boater. We take the anxiety out of boating by teaching with patience and humor. Our course is the most rigorous of its kind.

What to Expect During Training

Depending on the size of your boat and the complexity of the systems aboard gauges the amount of time needed to complete the course. Training days typically run from morning until the early evening or late afternoon. Our schedules are customizable and we will do our best to accommodate your schedule and needs.

The first day is spent going from bow to stern learning about systems. It is important as a boat owner that you know how your systems function, so if there is a malfunction you can identify why. We review the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) standards and train you to recognize if something is not in compliance with the standards.

The next couple of days are usually spent concentrating on maneuvering, docking, anchoring, rules of the road and emergency preparedness. We perform a variety of emergency simulations while training to assure that you are ready to manage all emergencies if they were to occur in real life. Examples of these simulations are taking on water, on-board fire and zero visibility.

Group Lessons

We feel it is extremely important that anyone you will be boating with has a general knowledge of what is happening with the boat. Whether that is your spouse, family or friends. It is beneficial that all parties have the same understanding of the boating process. This creates for relaxing cruising.

We charge a daily rate, which allows for more people to join the training at no additional cost.
